How dry are the carpets, when can I walk on them?
The carpets ae usually merely damp. They dry in about 2 hours or less on a normal day with reasonable ventilation if the carpet has cleaned with the normal amount of cleaning solution. Furniture should be left as long as possible. Any wood or metal furniture legs should have plastic protectors under them to prevent marking the damp carpet.
What marks will come out?
Marks are usually one of three types, built up, greasy or stains. Built up are usually soil such as mud or food. These usually come out with normal cleaning or a spot remover on more stubborn marks. Greasy are oil or similar and need a different spot remover containing a citrus or alcohol based oil remover. Stains are more complicated as they are usually colouring of some sort that has dyed the fibre. Some of these, notably the bright food colours and curry stains, are vitually impossible to remove without removing the original colour as well. Red wine, tea and coffee are usually removable if they have not been left too long. The quicker they are dealt with the better.
What can I do if I spill something?
DO NOT PUT SALT ON A SPILL- Salt is used in dye houses to set the dye. You will make it impossible to remove the colour.
DO NOT POUR WHITE WINE ON A RED WINE SPILL. Drink the white wine -- use water instead!
Beverages and wines are best dealt with by blotting as soon as posible with kitchen tissue, this is more absorbant than dry cloth. Sprinkle cold water on the mark so it is wettish but not soaking. Blot again, noting whether any colour has come up on the tissue. If it has, then repeat the sprinkling and blotting until no more colour comes up. Put fresh tissue on six thicknesses and press down with your heel to excert as much pressure as possible, repeat until no more damp comes up. DO NOT RUB OR SCRUB AT THE MARK OR USE WATER WARMER THAN LUKE WARM this will damage the texture of the carpet irrevocably. If there is a mark left we can try to get it out. We do not reccomend the use of proprietary ‘stain removers’ as we find that they are ineffective and can remove the colour from the carpet, especially the lighter colours. ‘Home remedies’ can set the stain. Solid spills are dealt with by scraping as much as possible off the surface and then proceeding as above.
Is protection helpful?
We have a safe water based protection solution that is rated 1 out of a maximum 5 on the EU hazard scale. It is effective on most liquid spills, giving about a minute and a half to mop up a puddle before it soaks in. It will not stop dry dirt, but will make it easier for you to dry vacuum out and eventually easier and more effective to wet clean. Certain furniture covers are not suitable for protection, but smooth light coloured fabrics are ideal.
How often should I have things cleaned?
When they are dirty and need freshening up. Sometimes this is every few months, sometimes much longer.
